🗓️ Day-Wise Itinerary
🚞 Day 1: Hasimara ➝ Thimphu (Immigration & Enroute Sightseeing)
Pick up from Hasimara Railway Station. After completing immigration formalities at Phuentsholing, visit:
- Zangtopelri Lhakhang: Near the weekend market, this modern chapel was built in the 1990s by Dasho Aku Tongmi, the composer of Bhutan’s national anthem. It represents Guru Rinpoche’s celestial abode.
- Kharbandi Gompa (Rinchending Monastery): Located 5 km from Phuentsholing, this monastery overlooks the Indian plains and Bhutanese hills. Built under the patronage of the late Queen Mother Ashi Phuntsho Choden.
- Then drive to Thimphu, enjoying views of scenic mountains and waterfalls. Thimphu is a unique city where modern development blends with ancient traditions. It remains the only capital in the world without traffic lights!
- Evening: Stroll through the Handicrafts Emporium and local crafts bazaar for Bhutanese textiles, thangkhas, wood carvings, masks, and other handicrafts.
Overnight stay in Thimphu. (Altitude: 2,320m)
🏙️ Day 2: Thimphu Sightseeing
After breakfast, enjoy a full day of local sightseeing:
Morning:
- Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Dordenma)
- Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory
- Handicrafts Emporium & National Library
- Changangkha Monastery
- Zorig Chusum (Institute of 13 Traditional Arts)
- Textile Museum
- National Memorial Chorten
- Craft Gallery
- Bhutan Postal Museum
- Folk Heritage Museum
Afternoon:
- Takin Preserve Centre – Home to Bhutan’s national animal, the takin (a goat-cow hybrid).
- Tango Monastery
- Tashichho Dzong – A grand fortress-monastery.
- Craft Bazaar Market
Overnight stay in Thimphu.
🏞️ Day 3: Thimphu ➝ Punakha/Wangdue (Sightseeing en route)
After breakfast, drive to Punakha/Wangdue, with visits on the way:
- Dochula Pass (3100 m) – A scenic stop offering panoramic Himalayan views and 108 memorial chortens.
- Suspension Bridge – Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge, stretching across the Po Chhu River.
- Punakha Dzong – The “Palace of Great Happiness,” situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
Afternoon:
- Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple) – Built in the 14th century, associated with the divine madman Drukpa Kunley.
- Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten – Commissioned by the Queen Mother, this temple promotes world peace. Hike through rice fields to reach it.
Overnight stay in Punakha/Wangdue.
🦢 Day 4: Punakha ➝ Phobjikha ➝ Punakha (Return)
After breakfast, drive to the stunning Phobjikha Valley (approx. 2.5 hrs, 3000m altitude):
- Nyelung Dechenling – One of the 8 residences of Longchenpa, with rare relics and thangkas.
- Gangtey Goenpa Monastery – A grand 17th-century monastery of the Nyingma tradition.
- Phobjikha Valley – A glacial valley and winter home to the endangered Black-Necked Cranes that migrate from Tibet (Oct–April).
Return to Punakha for overnight stay.
🏯 Day 5: Punakha ➝ Paro (Local Sightseeing)
After breakfast, drive to Paro (approx. 2.5 hrs) and visit:
- Simtokha Dzong – The first dzong in Bhutan, built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
- National Museum of Bhutan – Located in Ta-Dzong, showcasing Bhutanese art and heritage.
- Rinpung Dzong – A majestic fortress-monastery built in 1646.
- Nya Mey Zam Bridge – Famously known as “The Bridge with No Fish.”
Overnight stay in Paro.
🌄 Day 6: Paro ➝ Chele La Pass ➝ Paro
After breakfast, take a scenic drive to:
Chele La Pass (3988m) – Bhutan’s highest motorable road pass, offering panoramic views of Mt. Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. The journey passes through lush forests with waterfalls, yaks, and rhododendrons.
Return to Paro for the night.
🧗♂️ Day 7: Paro – Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery
After breakfast, embark on an unforgettable hike to:
Tiger’s Nest (Taktsang Monastery) – Clinging to a cliff 900m above the valley, it’s one of Bhutan’s most iconic sites. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew here on a tigress to subdue a demon and meditated for three months.
This hike takes around 6 hours round trip and offers breathtaking views of pine forests and prayer flags.
Return to Paro and relax.
Overnight stay in Paro.
🚘 Day 8: Paro ➝ Phuentsholing ➝ Hasimara Station – Departure
After breakfast, check out and drive to Phuentsholing, enjoying waterfalls and mountain scenery en route.
Complete exit formalities, then proceed to Hasimara Railway Station for your return journey.
