🗓️ Day-Wise Itinerary

🛬 Day 1: Pick-up from Hasimara Station – Transfer to Thimphu (via Phuentsholing Sightseeing)

Pick-up from Hasimara Railway Station. After completing immigration formalities, visit:

  • Zangto Pelri, Phuentsholing: Located near the weekend market, this modern chapel was built in the 1990s to represent Guru Rinpoche’s celestial abode. Constructed by Dasho Aku Tongmi, the composer of Bhutan’s national anthem.
  • Kharbandi Gompa (also known as Rinchending Gompa): Located about 5 km from Phuentsholing Town, it overlooks the Great Indian plains in the south and majestic mountains in the north. Built under the patronage of Queen Mother Ashi Phuntsho Choden.

Continue driving to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city, offering a unique blend of modern development and ancient traditions. With a population of about 90,000, it is perhaps the only capital city in the world without traffic lights.

Evening: Stroll through the government-run Handicrafts Emporium and local crafts bazaar, where you can browse and shop for hand-woven textiles, thangkha paintings, masks, ceramics, wood carvings, jewelry, and more.

Overnight stay at the hotel in Thimphu. (Altitude: 2,320 m)

After breakfast, enjoy a full day of sightseeing:

  • Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Dordenma) – A huge statue of Buddha overlooking the valley.
  • Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory
  • Handicrafts Emporium

  • Changangkha Monastery
  • Zorig Chusum (Institute of 13 Traditional Arts & Crafts)
  • Textile Museum

Afternoon:

  • Takin Preserve Centre – Home to Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin (a rare mix between goat and cattle).
  • Tango Monastery
  • Tashichho Dzong – Fortress of the Glorious Religion.
  • Craft Bazaar Market

Overnight stay at Thimphu.

fter breakfast, drive to Punakha with en route sightseeing:

  • Dochula Pass Viewpoint (3100 m) – Offers panoramic views of the Himalayas (35 mins from Thimphu).
  • Suspension Bridge – One of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, located in Punakha Valley.
  • Punakha Dzong – Known as the “Palace of Great Happiness,” it lies at the confluence of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.

Afternoon:

  • Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple) – Built in the 14th century by Drukpa Ngawang Choegyel. Known for its unique legends and fertility blessings.
  • Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten – Commissioned by the Queen Mother in 2004, this temple promotes world peace. A short hike through rice fields leads to the temple.

Overnight stay in Punakha / Wangdue.

After breakfast, drive to Paro (approx. 2.5 hrs) and visit:

  • Simtokha Dzong – The first Dzong of Bhutan, built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
  • National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong) – Located above Rinpung Dzong, this museum showcases Bhutanese culture, bronze statues, and ancient artworks.
  • Rinpung Dzong – Built in 1646, it houses the monastic body, the Dzongda (district head), and Thrimpon (judge).
  • Nya Mey Zam Bridge – Known as “The Bridge with No Fish.”

Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in Paro.

After breakfast, proceed to Chelela Pass (approx. 2 hrs drive):

  • Located at 3,988 m, Chelela is the highest road pass in Bhutan.
  • The drive offers breathtaking views through forests of spruce and larch.
  • In clear weather, catch glimpses of Mt. Jomolhari (22,000 ft), Jichu Drake, and panoramic views of the Paro Valley.

Return to Paro for overnight stay.

After breakfast, prepare for an unforgettable hike:

  • Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang): One of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks, perched on a cliff. Believed to be the meditation site of Guru Rinpoche who flew here on the back of a tigress to subdue a demon.
  • Surrounded by pine and rhododendron forests, this sacred site takes about 3 hours to hike up and 3 hours to descend.

Return to hotel and relax. Overnight stay in Paro.

After breakfast, check out and proceed to Phuentsholing, enjoying scenic views of mountains and waterfalls en route. Complete exit formalities, then drive to Hasimara Railway Station.
